What is IV Therapy?

The IV Therapy, abbreviation for Intravenous Therapy, is a medical technique that infuses fluids, medications and nutrients directly into the vein.

It’s a therapeutic modality with a fast response, also providing comfort for the patients when it is well administered.

IV Therapy is not new to the medical treatments, as it was first attempted in the 1600s – but was abandoned because of the poor hygiene in that time.

But by the 1970s decade, the first IV vitamin therapy was developed by Dr John Myers. The Myers IV cocktail became worldwide famous with the intravenous vitamin we know until nowadays.

The Intravenous drip therapy provides a combination of saline, antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids, and minerals directly to your bloodstream through an IV system.

Since the nutrients and fluids bypass your digestive system and go directly into your organs, you don’t have to wait for it to process them – which can take hours.

It also involves the right practical choice, biocompatible catheters, analysis and selection of the right veins, to increase the chances of an effective drug administration.

What are the benefits of intravenous therapy?

Since patients get nutrients delivered directly to the bloodstream, there’s a 90-100% chance of absorption, opposed to a 20-50% absorption orally

You can think of it as the express train directly to your desired destination of an optimally healthy body and immune system.

The nutrients in the drip rid your body of toxins, balance hormone levels, and improve the appearance and health of your skin.

And it’s fast, more effective and without gastrointestinal side effects, absorption issues or loss of potency.

There is a lot of benefits of IV Therapy, in various different ways, such as:

Dehydration

It’s actually a traditional form to treat it. The body quickly achieves optimal hydration and recovers energy. In mild to moderate cases, a dehydrated person can experience:

  • Thirst;
  • Headaches;
  • Dizziness;
  • Rapid breathing;
  • Dry lips and tongue.

In severe cases of dehydration, a person can experience:

  • Severe dizziness that makes you can’t stand or walk;
  • Confusion;
  • Fever;
  • Seizures;
  • No urine output – or little urine very dark yellow.

So Hydration Therapy involves IV drip with fluids full of electrolytes (such as magnesium, potassium, B vitamins…) to hydrate your body faster, with customized fluids for your necessities.

Nutrition

By vitamin and nutrition blood tests, it’s possible to check what nutrients our bodies lack and which ones they’re getting enough from food and natural sources.

In the case there is a lack of any mineral or vitamin, IV therapy can be carried out to supply what is missing precisely.

Since it works in the bloodstream, the results are more efficient than pills or supplements treatment.

And it also works for healthy people who want to boost their immunity, wellness and energy levels with IV Vitamin Therapy.

What types of conditions can IV drip therapy address?

IV therapy, vitamins, intravenous therapy.

What are the most Common IV Vitamin Therapy Cocktail Drips?

  • The Myers Cocktail IV – it’s a fluid with magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin C, and treats a lot of medical conditions, such as immunity and energy levels.
  • Hydration IV Drip – if you need to recover from a loss of fluids because of vomiting, diarrhoea, hangover, etc. But athletes wanting to maximise their performance could benefit from it too.
  • Detoxification Booster IV Infusion – combines essential fluids, vitamins and minerals that will lower your toxic load. Did you know that toxins are stored in your fat cells, making it difficult to lose weight?
  • Immunity Booster IV – these cocktails have a lot of powerful antioxidants – glutathione, cysteine and arginine, protecting you from flu or other viruses.

Why would I consider IV therapy?

IV therapy helps you achieve optimal wellness and can address acute conditions, since you get nutrients delivered directly to your bloodstream, so there’s 100% absorption. You’ll quickly achieve optimal hydration and increased energy.

IV therapy also allows your practitioner to administer higher doses of certain nutrients than is possible with oral administration that can cause stomach distress and poor absorption.

If you have trouble taking a multivitamin daily, IV therapy can also be an effective substitute. People who have gastric sleeves for weight loss also benefit from the hydration and nutrient boost of IV therapy.

IV drip therapy can help you recover faster from a hard weekend of partying, too. It speeds up the rate at which your body processes the alcohol, so you experience a shorter, less severe hangover.

Who can perform IV Therapy?

You have to be licensed to perform IV Therapy. And a licensed professional has to attend an accredited college or university to obtain a Practical Nursing program certificate or a degree in nursing.

That means you have to be a current LPN or RN to perform it. Also, since IV Therapy is very specific, there’s training in some states that can be requested in order to perform intravenous therapy.

What can I expect during IV drip treatment?

You need no specific prep before coming in for a drip. You’ll discuss your symptoms and health goals with your practitioner, who will then customize a drip for you.

A technician puts an IV into a vein (usually in your arm) and hooks up your drip bag. You sit quietly, for 20-45 minutes, as the fluids enter your bloodstream.

You can go back to your regular activities after the drip, feeling more energetic and healthy immediately.

Is IV Therapy Safe?

Nowadays, the administration of intravenous fluids is very common and generally safe. But it is possible to have some things to keep and eye on, such as the increasing risk of adverse effects.

If you have medical conditions, it’s always better if you consult your doctor before starting any treatment, to avoid complications.

Since intravenous therapy punctures your skin, there’s a few risks of infection – even though it is unlikely, it’s important to ensure the safety of your vitamin infusion.
